Collect Heart Rate Data

Modified on Fri, 12 Apr at 6:01 PM

RowHero collects heart rate data to determine the target intensity of a workout based on pre-configured HR zones.

While RowHero collects HR data for both team and private workouts, HR zones are only available for teams.

There are three pieces to collecting HR data:

  1. Set up HR Zones (Teams only)
  2. Set your max HR
  3. Connect your HR monitor
  4. Review Your Data

This articles walk you through all 3 pieces.

Heart Rate Zones

Heart rate zones are available only for teams on the High Performance subscription. To request zones, please submit a request via our help site with the following information:

  1. Ticket Title: "Request for Heart Rate Zones - [Team Name]"
  2. Include the following for each zone:
    1. Short name (2 characters preferred, 3 characters max; e.g., "UT1")
    2. HR Range (Expressed in terms of % max HR)
    3. Color - simple name or hex code. If you're unsure we can make suggestions.

Set Your Max Heart Rate

Heart rate zones are based on the max heart rate for each athlete. Change your max heart rate on your Settings Screen.

Once you change your heart rate, scroll down and tap the Save Profile button.

Connect Your Heart Rate Monitor

RowHero reads heart rate data via the Concept2 PM5. If your monitor can connect to the PM5 (either through Bluetooth or ANT+), then RowHero can capture it.

First, put your heart rate monitor on.

Next, from the Concept2 Main Menu, tap Connect and then tap Connect Heart Rate.

Wait for a few seconds until your monitor shows up. If you have a chest strap and don't see it, you may need to wet the band or apply electrode gel for the monitor to start transmitting.

Select your monitor and wait while the PM5 starts receiving heart rate data. Confirm your selection.

Now your heart rate data will be tracked for every new piece you row.

Review HR Data (Individuals)

After a workout, you can review your heart rate data on the Workout Summary Screen. You'll see the total time spent in each zone (if zones are set up), as well as your average and max HR for the workout.

Review HR Data (Teams)

You can rank athletes by their heart rate zone and average percent of HR max by selecting HR Zone on the ranking screen. This is an easy way to verify that athletes are in the prescribed intensity zone for your workout plan.
